Name Change

I think it is kind of odd that people tend to change their names as they get older. Is it an identity crisis of some sort? Maybe because I go by Katie and my legal name is Katherine, I couldn't imagine ever going by Katherine, Kate, Kathy or any other nickname for Katherine. Just because I'm older does that mean my name should change too?
